Positioning itself as the first encounter, Through Me, The Road’ is an immediate, bodily experience of awe.
You lean back. Your eyes open wide and your chest opens.
Brightly lit and standing at three metres tall and clad in light blue, the installation is invitational. A series of nine successive pairs of doors open one way and must be pushed; it is an action of choice. As they close behind you automatically, commitment to your choice and follow through is required.
The title, ‘Through Me, The Road’ is inspired by the opening lines from Dante Aligheri’s Inferno, Canto III. Before he and Virgil begin their journey into the circles of Hell (then of course, through Purgatorio and Paradiso) they first enter the vestibule of the uncommitted - those who cannot make decisions and must chase a blank banner forever more. ‘Through me, The Road’ is about the physical experience of making a choice, even if that choice is a difficult one, it is better than doing nothing.
